Marcopolo, Brazil's largest bus builder, reported worldwide production of 16,456 units in 2005, a 3.3% increase over 2004 production levels of 15,938, local news service Maxpress reported.
Domestically Marcopolo produced 14,424 buses; the company also contracted the Ana Rech factory in southern state Rio Grande do Sul to produce an additional 3,586 CKD, PKD, and SKD models. From the Ana Rech factory Marcopolo exported 1,000 buses to Chile, to fill an order for capital Santiago's transport modernization plan Transantiago.
In South Africa, Colombia, Mexico and Portugal Marcopolo produced 5,616 units, up 29.2% from 2004 when the subsidiaries produced 4,349 buses.
Marcopolo representatives expect to produce 16,500 units worldwide this year. Domestically the company expects to grow in the urban transport sector and mini-buses; demand in both sectors dropped in 2005.
