Railroad integration under study
Bnamericas Published: Thursday, June 13, 2002
Bolivian and Peruvian government authorities have met with the Andean Development Corporation (CAF) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to evaluate a railroad integration plan, Peru's El Comercio newspaper reported. After the meeting, held in Bolivia's capital La Paz, both governments assigned local private consultants to develop the respective feasibility studies. A non-operational railroad links La Paz with Guaqui, on the shores of lake Titicaca, which in turn connects to the Peruvian network via a river ferry service. The studies will determine the feasibility of connecting these networks through the construction of a Guaqui (Bolivia)-Puno (Peru) line, on the southern shore of the lake. The project is part of the so-called South American Infrastructure Initiative, which seeks the integration of Peruvian, Bolivian, Chilean, Brazilian and Paraguayan transportation infrastructure.
