Canadian aerospace and transportation company Bombardier is looking to participate in different railway opportunities that have recently opened up in South America, David Fussel, Bombardier's director of sales and business development in the region, told BNamericas.
"After that, we're also considering participating in light rail projects to be announced by the government, including projects in [the Santiago districts of] Quilicura, Padre Hurtado and Las Condes, as well as other projects in the cities of Antofagasta, Concepción and Copiapó."
With a tender expected to be called in the coming months, the Santiago metro expansion will represent an important business opportunity for the company as well as a chance for the state-owned subway operator to expand its supplier base.
"[Metro is] looking to have a fully automated system, the so-called Unattended Train Operation (UTO) system. Bombardier is the company with the most experience in UTO systems," the executive said.
"In the rest of the region, there are several projects lining up: construction of [Ecuadorian capital] Quito's metro line 1, [Peruvian capital] Lima's metro line 2, and [Colombian capital] Bogotá's Carrera Séptima light rail project," Fussel added.
The firm recently opened its offices in Chilean capital Santiago, which is expected to serve as a business platform for opportunities in Spanish-speaking South America.
