CAF to finance up to US$500mn in Uruguay infra PPPs
Latin American development bank CAF launched a US$500mn debt fund on the Montevideo stock market to finance road and education infrastructure in Uruguay over the next 30 years.
The mechanism, which follows a previous US$350mn fund CAF launched in 2016, involves a trust fund that will issue bonds on stock market BVM and Uruguay's electronic stock market BEVSA, the bank said in a press release. The fund will then provide long-term loans for projects.
"CAF will co-finance 10% of the debt investment," the statement says.
In separate remarks to daily El Observador, the CAF's senior executive in Uruguay, Omar González, said the fund will finance PPP projects. "This is a mechanism that is working because states can't finance all infrastructure projects," he said.
González added that the resources from the 2016 fund have already been allocated to five PPP projects, some of which are under construction.
