Conconcreto to build US$1bn port on Colombia's Caribbean coast
Colombian engineering and construction firm Conconcreto will invest some 3tn pesos (US$990mn) to construct a new port complex on Colombia's Caribbean coast, with works scheduled to begin in 2016, local newspaper El Colombiano reported.
To be known as the Darién International Port (DIT), the site covers 230ha and is in Necoclí municipality, within the Urabá subregion of Antioquia department.
The DIT will be built as a multipurpose port to handle liquid and dry bulk, loose cargo and container shipments, and will have an installed capacity of 680,000t by 2020, according to US-based infrastructure consultancy Moffatt & Nichol, who conducted traffic studies for the project, El Colombiano said.
As Conconcreto is involved in a number of sectors, including hydroelectric generation and infrastructure works such as bridges, roads, and tunnels, among others, the DIT will serve to buttress the firm's activities and is strategically positioned to improve Colombia's competiveness, said Conconcreto CEO Juan Luis Aristizábal.
The DIT will sit 380km overland from Medellín, 820km from Bogota, and around 575km from Colombia's coffee-growing axis, known locally as the Eje Cafetero.
Conconcreto holds the concession to the DIT, although no details have been provided as to the duration of the concession period.
Colombia is also seeking to develop another port in Urabá, which is expected to draw bids from 10 consortiums and require an investment estimated at 1.2tn pesos.
