Lima airport expansion gets long-overdue push
Lima's Jorge Chávez international airport concessionaire ended a 17-year wait after the government finally awarded land needed for a US$1.2bn expansion, one of Peru's biggest transport infrastructure projects.
Officials from the transport and communications ministry and concessionaire Lima Airport Partners (LAP) signed an agreement to take possession of 280ha of adjoining land. LAP was authorized in 2001 to build a second terminal, runway and control tower. Since then, the number of passengers handled by the airport has jumped eightfold to 23mn/y.
"So much time has passed, almost 18 years, to meet a commitment that the state should have done in a year. Four presidents have come and gone and they didn't hand over the land for the airport expansion," President Martín Vizcarra said at a ceremony held at the airport.
LAP, which last month awarded the expansion contract to FCC Construcción, Salini Impregilo and AECOM, previously invested US$350mn to expand the existing terminal and add 19 gates. The new expansion will trigger additional investments around the airport in Callao such as hotels, offices and convention centers, Vizcarra said.
The expansion will enable the airport to handle 40mn passengers annually by 2030, foreign trade and tourism minister Rogers Valencia told state news agency Andina.
"We're ready to start and move the project along within the terms of the concession contract," LAP CEO Juan José Salmón said in broadcast comments. "We trust the government will support us in case of any interference that may occur along the way."
