Panama details US$1bn school infrastructure investment
Panama's current government will invest some US$1.04bn in school infrastructure by the end of 2019, benefitting around 300,000 students, according to the education ministry.
Works include building new schools and rehabilitating existing ones across the country.
Some US$424mn of the total will be invested in the construction of 33 new schools, while US$296mn are being used to upgrade 189 facilities in remote and low-income areas. In addition, US$321mn are being invested to expand and remodel 186 existing schools.
Five of the 33 new schools have already been completed. Some of these are in the Ngabe Buglé and EmberáWounaan indigenous territories and the provinces of Chiriquí and Pacora.
Contracts for four other schools have been tendered, as the remaining 24 are already under construction. These projects are expected to benefit 47,000 students.
In addition, the education ministry has also carried out improvements for US$27mn through the Mi Escuela Primero program, in which participates the private sector. Under the Mi Escuela program, 165 projects have already been completed, 23 are under construction, 34 will start soon. The ministry also plans to include 50 more schools.
