Panama metro line 'not delayed' despite award probe
Panama's comptroller general is due to announce by August the date on which a contract to build line No.2 of capital Panama City's metro system will be signed, BNamericas was told.
Consortium Línea Dos, which comprises Brazil's Odebrecht and Spain's Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas, was awarded the tender to build the line in May.
But the tender process is being reviewed by the comptroller general after complaints were received.
"In this tender there were complaints; therefore that extends the process, but we are not delayed, we're on time," a Panama City metro authority spokesman told BNamericas.
The project price tag is estimated at US$1.85bn.
Line No.2 will connect with Line No. 1 linking the city's northern and eastern areas.
The new line, which will transform access to the system for an estimated 500,000 people, will stretch 22km and have 16 stations.
Construction is expected to take around 46 months and be concluded in 2018.
LINE NO.1
An audit of construction work on Panama City's metro line No.1 is due to take months, a spokesman for Panama's comptroller general told BNamericas.
Consortium Línea Uno, which won the tender for the line, comprises the same firms as Consortium Línea Dos.
The audit, which got underway on Monday, is being carried out following corruption allegations that have been made against Odebrecht in Brazil, the spokesperson added.
On June 19, Brazilian federal police arrested the presidents of Odebrecht and fellow construction firm Andrade Gutierrez in a new phase of an investigation into corruption at Brazil's state-owned oil company Petrobras.
