Santos blames ELN for attacks on road infra
Colombia's President Juan Manuel Santos blamed the ELN guerilla for a series of explosives attacks which affected road infrastructure in Cesar department over the weekend. Authorities stated that works are underway to normalize traffic conditions.
One attack affected Simañá bridge, which connects Pelaya and La Gloria municipalities. The attack prevented transit of up to 600 vehicles, a press release from the transport ministry said. In response, authorities decided to habilitate an older bridge, which runs parallel to the attacked one.
At the same time, two toll stations in the same department were targeted, though highway authority INVIAS stated that both stations reopened shortly after cleanup works finished.
Both stations sit at the Río de Oro-Aguaclara-Gamarra crossing, which was part of the now canceled contract with Concesionaria Ruta del Sol, hit by the Odebrecht bribes scandal.
In response to the attacks, Santos said that such acts aim to "generate fear."
"Once again the ELN acts completely incoherent when it says that it wants us to seek peace, but those words are counteracted by the facts," Santos was quoted as saying in a press release from the presidency.
The government suspended peace talks with ELN rebels after seven police officers were killed last month.
