São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro assigned US$15bn urban mobility funding
Brazil's national development bank BNDES has earmarked 39.2bn reais (US$15.2bn) for urban mobility works in the metropolitan regions of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro from 2015-18, according to the bank's investment portfolio.
The works include the construction of metro, monorail, bus rapid transit (BRT) and light rail transit (LRT) systems. The amount represents 63% of the bank's 50bn-real budget for the entire country.
Nationwide, 31.3bn reais will go to metro and train projects, 8.5bn reais to monorails, 7bn reais to BRTs and 3.2bn reais to LRTs, according to the portfolio.
The investments are part of urban mobility projects planned by the federal government under its growth acceleration plan, many of which will be carried out through public-private partnerships.
SÃO PAULO
Approximately 26.5bn reais is earmarked for the São Paulo region with most of it going to the city's metro company CMSP. It is building 57km of monorails for lines No. 15, 17 and 18, and 31km of subways for lines No. 2, 5 and 6.
The projects are part of the city's plan to double the metro network to 163km from 75km within the next 10 years.
The financing will be used to buy 74 monorail cars and 49 subway cars for CMSP, as well as 65 urban train cars for São Paulo metro company CPTM.
RIO DE JANEIRO
A total of 12.7bn reais is being used to finance six projects in Rio de Janeiro, two of which are the construction of metro line No. 4 (Ipanema-Barra) and line No. 3 (Niterói-São Gonçalo), which will likely be a monorail.
Rio's LRT in the downtown district and the Transcarioca, Transolímpica and Transbrasil BRTs are also receiving funds.
