Fines on the rise in Brazil health insurance sector

Brazil's private health insurance regulator ANS is imposing more fines on health insurance operators due to irregularities in services provided and absence of clear rules in certain contracts.

In the first nine month, fines totaled 304mn reais (US$92.8mn), according to ANS figures.

Last year was a record year in terms of fines, which then amounted to 372mn reais.

Most of the fines are due to undue denial of coverage, suspension or termination of contracts, failure to provide mandatory clauses in certain contracts, said the ANS.
