Telcos join GMSA's natural disaster campaign for Guatemala

Telecom operators Claro, Movistar, and Tigo signed a cooperation agreement with GSMA and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, committing to promote mobile services as a way to prepare for and respond to natural disasters.

The agreement is part of GSMA's We Care Guatemala campaign, the London-based mobile operators' association said in a statement.

The operators made a number of pledges, such as raising awareness and providing training about appropriate use of mobile telephony in emergencies, creating an action protocol to prioritize the mobile network as a public necessity, and analyzing the best technologies to implement for emergency response.

In addition, the campaign will create a coordination board among government institutions responsible for disaster response, the private sector, and other stakeholders.

GSMA underscored the importance of implementing this initiative in Guatemala since the country's geography makes it particularly prone to natural disasters.

The We Care campaign has already been launched in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, and the Dominican Republic. GSMA said it will continue to expand the campaign across Latin America.

In addition to the We Care campaign, Colombian operators recently signed the GSMA's Humanitarian Connectivity Chapter.
