Latest analog switch-off in Brazil postponed
The next analog TV switch-off scheduled for Brazilian localities was postponed.
Gired, the group of broadcasters mobile operators and regulators that oversees the analog blackout process, determined that the cities of Porto Alegre, Florianópolis, Franca and Ribeirão Preto, as well as their respective metropolitan regions, will not have their analog signal powered off as expected on Wednesday.
According to telecom regulator Anatel, these localities did not reach the minimum required digital-readiness rate and a new date was set for February 28. For Porto Alegre, where the rate was 88%, the shutdown was postponed to March 14.
Digitization rules establish that at least 93% of the households in a given region must be ready to receive a digital-only TV signal, but disconnection is accepted with a 90% level because of the margin of error.
Only Curitiba, with its analog blackout also scheduled for Wednesday, will go on with the switch-off plans. In the capital of Paraná state and 26 surrounding municipalities 91% of the households are ready for the digital-only signal.
