Brazil aluminum output dips through March
Brazil's primary aluminum production for the first quarter was 191,500t, down 7.3% compared with 206,500t in the same three months of 2015, industry association Abal reported.
Primary aluminum output in March dropped 9.4% year-on-year to 65,400t. Brazilian production of the metal began declining in March 2014 and has yet to bounce back. For full-year 2015, output totaled 772,200t.
The latest data reflects curtailments and shutdowns as the country shifts from being a leading aluminum exporter to a net importer. Aluminum's low price on the international market and Brazil's high energy costs are factors behind the trend.
Abal is made up of CBA, part of local conglomerate Votorantim, as well as US-based Alcoa, BHP Billiton, Albras and Novelis.
