Mexico launches competition probe into TV, radio markets
Mexico's telecoms regulator IFT launched on Friday a probe to determine if there are players with substantial economic power in the country's radio and television markets, just as leading broadcaster Televisa has said it is pondering to divest its radio business.
The official document to start the procedure does not indicate any particular players being investigated and specifically adds that there is no presumption of the existence of such dominant players.
The regulator has given itself 90 days to conduct the investigation.
Televisa, the world's largest producer of Spanish-language TV content, is also Mexico's leading TV broadcaster and was designated as the preponderant player in that market, meaning it controls over 50% after the telecommunications reform of 2013, allowing the IFT to slap stricter regulations on the company.
Televisa has recently sold stakes in several non-core businesses such as a shopping TV channel as well as in a Spanish media group. CEO Alfonso de Angoitia said the company is considering the possibility of divesting other non-strategic assets such as the radio broadcast and live entertainment units.
"The main analysis that we are making is that we have to get to a place where we feel comfortable in this consolidating world. (That is) if Televisa will be more valuable as a whole, as it is today, or whether the businesses will be more valuable than Televisa as a whole," De Angoitia told analysts during the company's last earnings call.
The "other businesses" section of Televisa's last quarterly financial statement, which includes the radio business, accounted for 8.3% of the company's net sales.
The company scored a win against the IFT in March after the regulation had to annul a previous decision branding Televisa the dominant player in the pay TV market.
