Operations at Peruvian miner Buenaventura's (NYSE: BVN) Uchucchacua silver mine in Lima region are at a standstill due to a strike, according to the head of national mining, metals and steelworkers federation FNTMMSP, Luis Castillo.
About 250 workers walked off the job on Wednesday (Oct 13), Castillo confirmed to BNamericas.
The workers' demands are related to improved ventilation in the mine and changes to their uniforms, among others.
The company and union were scheduled to meet on Thursday after talks planned for Wednesday were cancelled.
A representative from Buenaventura was unavailable for comment when contacted by BNamericas.
Buenaventura is Peru's largest publicly traded precious metals company. It operates six other mines and has a controlling interest in mining companies Cedimin and El Brocal.
