Chile SEA watch: nearly US$2bn submitted in September
Chile's environmental evaluation service (SEA) received US$1.94bn in mining-related projects for consideration in September, according to information compiled by BNamericas.
A total of five projects were submitted for review, the largest being the US$1.5bn optimization and expansion project of KGHM International's Sierra Gorda mine in northern Antofagasta region (II).
The project entails the expansion the mineral processing capacity to an average of 220,000t/d from the current 190,000t/d. It will also add two power lines, three water pipelines and a thermo-solar plant, secondary and tertiary grinders, a steel ball mill, a flotation line and two thickeners.
The next biggest project is worth US$300mn and aimed at improving the sulfuric acid plants at state copper producer Codelco's Chuquicamata mine. It is part of the company's plan to meet the new emission standards for sulfur dioxide and arsenic, due to be enforced in 2018. The project is set to meet Chuquicamata's sulfuric acid needs for at least 15 years, according to its environmental impact assessment.
The September submissions also include the US$90mn operational continuity project for Audley Capital's Mantoverde operation and the US$40mn tailings dam expansion at the Zaldívar mine, jointly controlled by Antofagasta plc and Barrick Gold.
