Codelco's contract workers to receive US$2,800 bonus

Thursday, August 25, 2011

Contract workers at Chilean state copper producer Codelco have signed an agreement with the association of contract companies Agema under which each worker will receive a 1.33mn-peso (US$2,800) gross bonus, contract workers confederation (CTC) president Cristián Cuevas told BNamericas.

The bonus will be divided into an 880,000-peso bonus to be paid in September and three 150,000-peso installments to be paid in December of 2011, 2012 and 2013, Cuevas said.

Under the agreement, which was the result of negotiations held over the last two months between the CTC and Agema, the two entities will form a permanent roundtable to discuss benefits and improved conditions for contract workers at Codelco's operations.

Contract workers at Codelco, and at private companies in Chile, have always been unhappy about the differences in their working conditions compared to those of staff workers.

The issue led contract workers to hold a strike at Codelco's El Teniente division in central region VI that lasted 53 days in the middle of this year.

More than 30,000 contract workers are employed at all of Codelco's divisions.
