Bolsonaro: Skilled partnerships will improve profile of mining industry
Brazil's leading presidential candidate, Jair Bolsonaro (pictured), is reportedly willing to partner with "first world countries" to improve the profile of the domestic industry and said the mining and metallurgy sectors are good examples.
In a broadcast interview with RecordTV, the far-right candidate said the country does not have enough resources to carry out research in the mineral area.
"But putting together what we have in natural resources with technology from partnerships, we can add value to our production," Bolsonaro said.
"What we cannot continue to do is to send ships of iron ore in exchange for a dinghy full of steel, because mineral resources can be depleted," he added.
BOLSONARO OPPOSED TO PRIVATIZATION OF POWER SECTOR
In addition, Bolsonaro argued against the privatization of the country's electricity sector and state-run power utility Furnas, as well as state-owned banks, such as Banco do Brasil and Caixa Econômica Federal. According to the candidate, Brazil needs to privatize some state-run companies, but not all of them.
Bolsonaro also confirmed that the country needs a dollar that makes domestic production and exports competitive, the lowest possible interest rate and to pay off its domestic debt.
ELECTIONS
On Sunday, Bolsonaro won the first round of the election with 46.5% of the vote, followed by Fernando Haddad of the leftist workers party (PT) with 28.5%.
As neither candidate was able to obtain 50% of the vote, they will face each other in an October 28 runoff. The winner takes power on January 1.
