Mexico targets pre-trade deal steel tariff resolution
Mexico's economy minister Ildefonso Guajardo will seek to resolve US steel tariffs before signing a renewed trade deal with its northern neighbor.
The US imposed 25% tariffs on Mexican steel and 10% on aluminum on June 1 as previous exemptions ended.
Mexico retaliated days later with its own tariffs on US steel, pork, apples, whiskey and a raft of other products.
Guajardo plans to resolve these "commercial aggressions" before signing a proposed bilateral trade deal with the US, he told reporters at an event organized by The Economist magazine in Mexico City.
The deal, which follows a year of Nafta negotiations, was announced by US President Donald Trump last month. Canada remains in negotiations which could see it join the revised deal.
CHANGE OF HEART?
Guajardo's comments reflect an apparent change in policy.
The minister stated previously that talks aimed at lifting the tariffs would only take place once the trade deal was signed.
The comments follow calls by Mexican steel chamber Canacero for the issue to be resolved as part of the revised trade deal.
