MTW to request US$300mn for infrastructure development program
Bnamericas Published: Thursday, January 20, 2011
Jamaica's transport and works ministry (MTW) will be requesting US$300mn to be set aside in the government's 2011-12 budget to fund the continuation of the country's infrastructure development program (JDIP). Based on the scope of work that is to be completed, the ministry is hoping to receive the majority of the funds, according to transport minister Michael Henry. As of now, the government has set aside J$280mn (US$3.27mn) for the initiative. The five-year program is being financed by a US$400mn loan from China's Ex-Im bank, with US$60mn earmarked for the road project's 2010-11 budget, state news service JIS reported. Major components of the program include road upgrades, periodic maintenance, river training, and the construction and repair of bridges. Up to the end of December last year, projects had already started in parishes Kingston and St Andrew, St Thomas, Manchester, St Ann, St James, St Catherine, St Mary and Clarendon. A large portion of the program will be rolled out this month in other parishes, the report said.
