Colombia prepares to receive 1st LNG cargo
Colombian regasification terminal operator Sociedad Portuaria El Cayao expects to receive its first LNG shipment in the coming weeks.
The update follows the arrival, in Cartagena bay, of the Höegh Grace floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) from South Korea.
"With this regasification terminal, the country will have greater natural gas supply to cover thermoelectric demand which will, in turn, improve reliability of national power dispatch," deputy energy minister Rutty Paola Ortiz said in a mines and energy ministry statement.
Hyundai Heavy Industries built the FSRU, which can hold 170,000m3 and regasify 400Mf3/d. Construction took 16 months.
The startup of the LNG import facility – the first of its kind in Colombia – and December's expected gas supply deliveries from Venezuela come amid depressed domestic gas production which stakeholders partly attribute to regulatory and permitting delays and a lack of transport capacity.
