EP Petroecuador implemented in its refining operations the Refinery Petrochemical Modeling System (RPMS), an integral system that supports the development and analysis of mathematical programming models of refineries and petrochemical plants. The RPMS is the software that is used to do the Linear Planning of the process.

Its function is to facilitate the definition and generation of a model (matrix) for the optimization of mathematical programming and provide information from the optimal solution. The RPMS helps oil and petrochemical companies achieve maximum profitability through effective planning, taking into account the factors that affect the company's operations.

Global Model

The Public Company, currently has a global model that includes the submodels of the Esmeraldas, La Libertad, Shushufindi refineries; the El Beaterio and Pascuales terminals; as well as those of distribution of fuels, of the north and south zones.

The preconditions to the application of the RPMS system were the following:

  • Yields of the units not according to the actual operation of refineries.
  • Lack of raw material to prepare fuels (example: artisanal gasoline).
  • Prices of raw materials and outdated fuels.
  • Currents to incorrect fuel preparation terminals.
  • Lack of properties in finished fuels.
  • Lack of process units and units not operating.
  • There is no efficient distribution in the dispatch terminals.
  • There is no adequate structure for the transportation of products for refineries and terminals.

Corporate Headquarters Programming and Operational Coordination EP Petroecuador is in charge of managing the global model and the system acts l obtained the following:

  • Yields of all the refineries verified according to the actual operation of each of them.
  • Final products that comply with properties according to INEN standards.
  • Fuel preparation adjusted as close as possible to reality in each of the refineries and preparation terminals.
  • Refineries and preparation terminals comply with volumes that satisfy the national demand.
  • Updating the physicochemical properties of imported products.
  • Optimization of imports of High Octane and Diesel Naphtha.
  • Improves the interaction of the submodels with the global model.
  • Better evaluation of the refineries separately.
  • Optimal preparation of fuels in mixing terminals.

In other words, the application of the Petrochemical Modeling System of the RPMS Refinery (for its acronym in English) has brought benefits in the operation of refineries and terminals of EP Petroecuador. The ultimate goal of this system is to produce more at lower cost .

Although promising results have been obtained, there are still some goals to be achieved to make the public oil company even more profitable. Among the future actions to be executed are the following:

  • Structure the entire transportation model, including restrictions and costs.
  • Improve the structure of distribution terminals.
  • Work on the inventory of all the products in each of the refineries and terminals.
  • Perform the multi period model for the global model and refineries.
  • Work in conjunction with the Transportation and International Trade Management to validate the global model.
  • Establish a unique procedure for the evaluation of the model in multi-period mode.
  • Establish a unique methodology for calculating prices of intermediate and final products.
  • Make custom formats of results according to the needs of the Petroecuador EP.

So far the following evaluations have been made after the implementation of the RPMS :

  • Start-up of the HNT and Isomerizing Unit.
  • Evaluation of the use of imported naphtha of different octane.
  • Evaluation of the supply and national demand of fuels for the month of January 2018 and comparison of results obtained in the meeting of January 26, 2018 (CUBAL January-February).

As in any process, the results obtained are those that determine whether the project is successful or not. So far, the application of the RPMS system has the following relevance:

  • Isomerizer

The most relevant point is that there is a clear reduction in the importation of High Octane Naphtha (NAO) 93 RON.

  • Imported Naphtha

For the test runs in the case of importing Nafta RON 95 instead of RON 93, the scenario is unfavorable, since the consumption of own gasoline is very low, that is, it increases imports.

  • National supply and demand

The Chief of Programming and Operational Coordination saw the need to work in the transport structure to correctly define the necessary volumes of importation of NAO and Diesel Premium.
