Pay-TV subscriptions fall in Brazil
Brazil saw a drop in the number of pay-TV subscribers in the country during 2015, the first drop in years.
According to the latest figures from telecoms regulator Anatel, the country ended April with slightly fewer subscribers than the 19.7mn benchmark recorded in March. Penetration stood at a third of the country's households.
In March, the country recorded its third consecutive month of declining growth in subscriber numbers and one of its weakest levels of pay-TV net additions, at just 42,000 compared to February.
América Móvil companies NET, Claroand Embratel lost around 20,000 clients and ended April with just over 10.2mn clients (51.8% of the total). Sky Brasil added some 40,000 and reached 5.72mn customers (29.0%).
Oi lost 25,000 customers, ending the month with 1.20mn, or 6.4% of the total.
GVT, now officially a Telefónica company, had 956,000 customers (4.8% of the market), while Telefônica Brasil had 799,000 (4.0%). Both gained clients in the period. The new company is is the country's third biggest pay-TV player, displacing Oi.
DTH technology lost penetration and accounted for 60.6% of the market, or 11.9mn subscriptions, cable TV had 38.7% (7.65mn) of the total and fiber optic (fiber-to-the-home, FTTH) 116,620 clients, growing but still accounting for less than 0.6% of all connections.
