Pension funds invest heavily in Mexico's energy sector
Mexico's pension funds have invested 114bn pesos (US$5.9bn) in bonds issued by NOC Pemex and state-run electricity company CFE. According to Mexico's finance ministry, the country's pension funds hold 25.1% of CFE and 7.1% of Pemex bonds with values of 45.5bn pesos and 67.3bn pesos, respectively.
Pension funds invested particularly strong in CFE Capital's Fibra E vehicle. Of the 863mn certificates with a value of 16.4bn pesos, 89.6% of Mexican issue and 59.7% of global issue were snapped up by national pension funds Azteca, Banamex, Invercap, PensionISSTE, Principal, Profuturo, Sura and XXI Banorte.
The Fibra E is a specialized investment vehicle to facilitate investment in the generation, transmission and distribution of electric energy, as well as infrastructure projects related to Mexico's 2015 energy reform.
