Congress to debate banning single use non-biodegradable plastic packaging

Peruvian legislators are set to debate a bill calling for the ban of single use non-biodegradable plastic packaging, the congressional website reported.

The bill, which was presented to congress on Monday, proposes substituting non-biodegradable polymers for biodegradable materials that have a useful life of no more than 360 days.

Producers, distributors and intermediate and end users would have two years to comply with the law once approved and after three years the production or sale of single use non-biodegradable plastic packaging would carry a prison sentence of between six months and two years.
