According to FTPV representative Yván Freites, the workers were trying to light one of the furnaces, which had been deactivated for five months.

The victims, one of whom suffered second and third degree burns, were taken to hospital for treatment, according to local newspaper La Verdad.

The Cardón plant forms part of the Paraguaná refinery complex, one of the largest in the world with capacity of 955,000b/d.

State-run oil company PDVSA, which operates the complex, did not comment on the incident.
