AMLO details proposal for Mexico's Tehuantepec isthmus
Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), who leads the polls ahead of Mexico's July 1 presidential election, provided more details on his plans to boost economic development through infrastructure projects in the Tehuantepec isthmus if elected.
At a campaign rally in Ixtepec, one of the municipalities comprising the isthmus region of Oaxaca and Veracruz state, AMLO said that his proposal provides an alternative route to the Panama Canal to transport goods from the Pacific Ocean to the United States, local press reported.
López Obrador's plan - as his infrastructure adviser Javier Jiménez Espriú told BNamericas - involves upgrading a rail line that connects the port cities of Coatzacoalcos and Salina Cruz, located on each end of the region. It also includes the modernization of a highway connecting both cities, and the expansion and improvement of the two ports.
In addition to the transport route, AMLO's plan would also develop industrial centers along 50km on each side of the road and rail network for the creation of jobs.
AMLO pledged not to expropriate land for his project and told the local farmers at the rally that they would be partners in the initiative, financed with public and private funds.
To further boost economic development in the region, which has some of the most underdeveloped areas of the country, López Obrador promised to upgrade the Antonio Dovalí Jaime oil refinery in Salina Cruz and managed by state-owned company Pemex.
