Brazil's airport concessions gain interest from 5 countries
Companies from at least five countries are reportedly eying Brazil's four upcoming international airport concessions, which are expected to be up for bids next quarter.
The companies are Germany's Fraport, Switzerland's Flughafen Zurich, France's Vinci, Spain's OHL and Mexico's Aeroportuário del Pacífico, also known as GAP, local paper Valor Econômico reported.
According to Fraport's global investment VP Michael Kunz, the company is looking for a local partner, the report said.
Although Fraport previously teamed up with Brazil's Ecorodovias, it intends to look elsewhere as that firm will concentrate on highway concessions. The two formed a consortium to compete for the concessions of Guarulhos airport in São Paulo and Galeão airport in Rio de Janeiro but lost.
"We're confident that traffic will increase in the medium-long term.... We'll definitely try again," Kunz was quoted as saying in the report.
In related news, Argentine concessionaire Inframérica was given the green light last week by civil aviation authority SAC to participate in the concessions despite regional restrictions (see below).
THE AIRPORTS
A call for bids is scheduled for November. Two of the airports are in the northeast – in Bahia state capital Salvador and Ceará capital Fortaleza.
The other two are in Porto Alegre in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul and Florianópolis in the southern state of Santa Catarina.
According to the federal government, a single bidder can only win one concession per region.
