Colombia kicks off work on Cesar-La Guajira 4G road project

Construction works have begun on the Cesar-Guarija highway between San Roque in Cesar department and Cuestecitas in La Guajira department in northern Colombia.

"This is good news since it will become a strategic complement to strengthen connections between the departments and will open up new opportunities for local people and for progress," said the president of the national infrastructure agency (ANI), Luis Fernando Andrade, in a press release.

Construction firm Construcciones El Cóndor, which is responsible for the project, accredited its financial closure of the project with the ANI on November 22, involving a total 158bn pesos (US$50mn). The closure was achieved thanks to commitments made by Colombian bank Bancolombia.

The Cesar-Guajira highway project has a total length of 350km, of which 233km will be upgraded and 166.5km will receive routine maintenance.

The PPP initiative will connect the departments of Cesar and La Guajira and will improve transort to and from the Venezuelan border.

On December 2015, 3.1km of highway between Valledupar and the township of Badillo as part of the pre-construction phase of the Cesar-La Guajira highway works.
