US software developer Adobe (Nasdaq: ADBE) on Tuesday (Oct 4) said it is committed to developing the best tools for both Flash and HTML5 development and is not prioritizing the former over the latter.
During the second day keynote speech at the company's MAX developer conference held in Los Angeles, Adobe executives revealed some of their strategy for taking the flagship Flash platform forward but, at the same time, enabling developers to build rich applications using HTML5.
Adobe gave several examples of how Adobe Flash and HTML work together to deliver enhanced user experiences in the browser and as apps.
Danny Winokur, Adobe's VP and general manager of platforms, indicated that the latest version of Flash, Flash 11, along with Adobe AIR 3, will provide better experiences for users and developers.
Andre Charland, cofounder and CEO of Nitobi, joined Ben Forta, Adobe's director of platform evangelism, on stage to announce that PhoneGap web design tools will be available on the Adobe Creative Cloud platform that Adobe announced Monday (Oct 3).
Adobe also announced that it has been contributing actively to HTML5 through the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).
The Adobe contributions include CSS Regions, which gives designers more control over text flow in HTML by letting them wrap text around graphics and custom shapes.
Adobe has also proposed CSS Shaders to the W3C as a contribution to HTML, with the goal of enabling rich, animated effects for HTML5 content through CSS. CSS Shaders is based on Adobe's Pixel bender technology.
Adobe also invited developers to experience 3D games with Flash Player. Flash Player 11, along with AIR 3, allows game publishers to deliver game console-quality, 3D games.
Andrew Stalbow, North America general manager for Rovio, maker of the popular Angry Birds game, said at the conference that new versions of the game would be built on Flash Player 11.
