Cisco: Coordination is first step in a smart city project
The starting point for smart city projects is to determine whether there is any overlap with different entities and coordinate between them, according to technology vendor Cisco Systems.
"Coordination is what's missing today. We have 52 municipalities here [in the metropolitan region of Santiago Chile], and each will have a different WiFi project, a different surveillance project, and all on networks that don't talk to each other," Cisco Chile's government and armed forces director Jorge Guajardo told BNamericas.
For example, in public WiFi, Chile's capital is being targeted separately by the metropolitan region government, central Santiago district and the nation's telecoms regulator Subtel, he points out.
"What needs to happen first is for the authorities to talk to each other, to unify criteria and projects, and ensure that each project is compatible with the others," the executive said, adding that only with agreed standards will there eventually be a single platform coordinating everything, which is the best way to maximize productivity.
Guajardo was speaking at a seminar run by Cisco Chile and the metropolitan region government to show other government entities how smart city projects have become a reality in different cities around the world. Cisco agreed to share knowledge with the metropolitan government in November 2014.
Cisco views smart city projects as a subset of its Internet of Things business line, and so far in Chile its smart city revenue has come from 'pseudo-city' projects involving the university, retail, banking and health sectors.
These verticals operate like cities, but on a different scale, Guajardo explained, pointing out that they too are subject to emergencies, so they need early warning systems and video surveillance, much like a city. As such smart city projects represent a small percentage of Cisco's revenue in Chile at present, he added.
