US provider Echelon Corporation (Nasdaq: ELON) will start selling smart meters in Brazil through a partnership with local supplier of digital electricity meters ELO Sistemas Eletronicos (ELO), Echelon said in a statement.
ELO has received approval from local authorities to start selling its smart meters portfolio in Brazil under local standards, becoming the first meter manufacturer to achieve the required certification.
Echelon Corporation, a provider of smart metering, automated metering infrastructure and utility solutions, will provide smart metering subsystems to ELO, including power line control and communication technology and embedded firmware for smart meters.
In conjunction with Echelon's solutions, ELO is providing an open-standard and multi-application control network solution customized for Brazil's market.
"Brazil is the clear regional leader in South America in terms of its market size, development of a smart meter regulatory framework and attractive market conditions. Brazil will be the first country in South America to begin large-scale deployments and will pave the way for other countries in the region to follow," president of research firm Northeast Group, Ben Gardner, was quoted as saying by Echelon.
"The benefit case driving smart meter deployments in Brazil includes the reduction of non-technical losses (theft) and improved reliability."
