Argentine President Cristina Fernández has signed a decree to create a new biometric ID system for the country, according to the presidential website.
All newborns in Argentina will receive the new ID cards starting from January 2012, Fernández said.
The new biometric system, called Sibios, will allow for the identification of citizens through fingerprints and facial features.
The government is currently in a digitalization phase, with more than 11mn IDs and 1mn passports processed. The total population - 40mn - is expected to be digitalized in two years.
The biometric ID software was reportedly developed with the support from the Cuban government.
