Gartner: Smartphones to buoy device shipments in 2016
Worldwide shipments of devices (PCs, tablets, ultramobiles and mobile phones) are expected to reach 2.4bn units in 2016, a 1.9% increase compared with 2015, with smartphones and ultramobile premium devices offsetting declines in traditional PCs, according to Gartner.
End-user spending in constant US dollars is expected to decline for the first time, falling 0.5%.
In a statement, Gartner research director Ranjit Atwal said that varying economic conditions across the world meant that vendors could no longer address markets as mature and emerging, but now divide them into four categories: economically challenged mature markets, economically stable mature markets and the same for emerging markets.
Brazil fall into the category of economically challenged emerging markets, while India is seen as stable and Japan is an economically challenged mature market.
PCs
The PC market is expected to decline 1% in 2016 to 287mn units, but then ramp up 4% in 2017 to 299mn.
Traditional PCs (desktops and notebooks) will continue to decline over the forecast period to 2018, while premium ultramobile devices like the MAcBook Air will gain ground.
A shorter testing period expected for Windows 10 means that many business are looking to move as much as 40% of their installed base onto new Windows 10 devices in 2017, mainly driven by the appeal of hybrid touch-screen 2-1 devices and this could be a catalyst for growth in the PC market in 2017, Gartner said.
Last week, consultancy IDC said that global shipments tumbled 10.6% in 4Q15, triggered by economic slowdown in China, a stronger US dollar, longer computer life-cycles and a stronger consumer focus on smartphones.
SMARTPHONES
Mobile phone shipments are on track to increase 2.6% in 2016, driven mainly by increased spending on smartphones, which are expected to make up 82% of mobile phones by the end of 2016, up by 12% from 2015, according to Gartner.
Local and Chinese brands are delivering more capable basic smartphones with appealing features at a lower price, which means that there is less of a need for users to upgrade to a premium smartphone.
Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi last year launched its brand in Brazil, Colombia and Mexico in a move to challenge some of the more established players.
