Brazil's government will issue a provisional decree later this week to exempt tablets from the PIS and Cofins welfare taxes, telecommunications secretary Nelson Fujimoto said Monday (May 16).
Currently, tablets are taxed at a rate of 9.25%.
The tax break was one of the demands made by Taiwan's Foxconn to start producing Apple's iPad tablet in Brazil as from July. Production was originally expected to begin in November.
The exemption will be in effect for all tablet models manufactured in Brazil, Fujimoto said.
