Gtd launches IT unit

Wednesday, August 24, 2011

Chilean telecommunications group Grupo Gtd has launched a new IT unit using technology from virtualization software firm VMware (NYSE: VMW), Gtd said in a statement.

Gtd has been offering housing services from its data centers for almost a decade and virtualization services since 2009. Today, 50% of Gtd servers are virtualized, and the goal is to achieve 100% in five years.

"We thought the project would start off with slow growth and it would be profitable in 12 months. We achieved that in 40 days," Gtd IT services and development manager Cristián Eyzaguirre said.

According to Eyzaguirre, one of the main obstacles faced by Gtd clients is the obsolescence of technology infrastructure and the high cost of software licenses, as well as availability, backup and storage.

Gtd incorporated VMware's vSphere 4 Enterprise Plus for virtualization services and opened up a new market.

Gtd has several units, including a pay-TV and broadband services offering over its FTTH network. The company also owns Telsur, an operator serving Chile's south.
