LatAm e-waste growing more than global average, says GSMA
Average year-on-year growth in production of electronic-waste (e-waste) in Latin America over the coming years is expected to be higher than the global average, according to a report by the GSMA Association (GSMA) and the United Nations' University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS).
The amount of e-waste produced in the region is forecast to reaching 4,800kt in 2018, up 70% compared with 2009, whereas global e-waste is projected to grow by 55% in the same period.
According to the study "E-waste in Latin America: Statistical Analysis and Policy Recommendations", e-waste generated by the Latin American population over the next four years will grow by between 5% and 7% annually.
In 2014, Latin America generated 9% of the world's 40,000kt electronic waste (e-waste), or 3,904kt.
The majority of e-waste in Latin America is generated in Brazil and Mexico, with the two countries producing 1,400kt and 1,000kt, respectively, in 2014.
They are followed by Argentina (292 kt), Colombia (252 kt), Venezuela (233 kt), Chile (176 kt) and Peru (147 kt).
The total average e-waste generated in 2014 in Latin America was calculated to be 6.6 kg per person, of which 29 g represents mobile phone e-waste per person, or approximately 0.3 mobile phones discarded by each individual each year, says the report.
For mobile phones in particular, some 189 kt were discarded worldwide last year, 17 kt of which was from Latin America. This represents 0.5% of the total weight of LatAms e-waste, in line with global average.
This amount is expected to grow in the 2015-2018 period at an average 6% growth rate, said GSMA, which recommends the region's countries to put in force e-waste management regulations, especially recycling and reverse logistics.
The report's recommendations to local regulators include campaigns to educate consumers; reliable access to raw materials; separate collection of mobile phones; efficiency in the recovery process; the creation of e-waste management and recycling infrastructure; and the recognition of extended producer responsibility (EPR).
