Chilean online government procurement portal ChileCompra registered US$7.79bn in transactions and some 2mn purchase orders from public institutions during 2011, the portal said in a statement.
Throughout the year, more than 103,000 providers participated in the system, and 90% of these were micro and small companies.
Average bids in tenders increased from 5.3 in 2009 to 6.4 in 2011, showing higher levels of competition, according to ChileCompra. When the portal was launched in 2003, on average 1.7 companies participated in each bidding process.
In addition, the total amount of online transactions registered this year represented US$280mn in savings for the state, or US$50mn more than in 2010.
Regarding transparency efforts, technical bids have been made public for 95% of tenders this year, allowing providers to know the winning proposal's economic and technical conditions.
ChileCompra has also announced new changes in regulation for the portal, expected to come into effect shortly and which aim at increasing opportunities for micro and small companies.
The measure will be supported with free training for users.
