Telebras, Viasat start SGDC satellite use after court decision
Brazilian state telecom Telebras and US satellite services firm Viasat deployed the first antennas under the Internet for All connectivity program, just one day after the Brazilian supreme court lifted a suspension on the partnership.
The ground antennas were deployed in a public school, an indigenous teaching institution and a border post of the Brazilian Army in the city of Pacaraima, Roraima state, next to the border with Venezuela. Around 4,000 municipalities signed up to the program.
The antennas were installed by Viasat, which was hired by Telebras to make the connection to the country's geostationary satellite of defense and strategic communications (SGDC), managed by the state telecom. Brazil's science, tech, innovation and communications minister (MCTIC), Gilberto Kassab, was present at the activation ceremony on Wednesday.
Around 1,500 students will benefit from the connection, as sites can access the internet at 10 Mbps.
Connecting municipal, state and education institutions via SGDC is part of a partnership between MCTIC and the education ministry under the Internet for All program, which aims to connect 7,000 institutions by the end of the year.
Other agreements exist with the ministry of defense and include the monitoring of Brazil's borders and actions to combat arms and drug trafficking; and with the health ministry, to deploy internet in remote hospitals and health posts, improving public management and the quality of services provided to the population.
