Ecuadorian state-owned telecoms operator Corporación Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (CNT) has connected to US wholesale carrier iBasis' (Nasdaq: IBAS) network for both termination and origination of international calls, the latter said in a statement.
Ecuador is the fourth fastest-growing telecoms market in the world for outbound calling minutes, experiencing 265% outbound traffic growth from 2001 to 2006, iBasis said, citing research from consultancy TeleGeography.
CNT - which has 1.7mn customers - launched operations last November, arising from the government's merging of the operations of fixed telephony operators Andinatel and Pacifictel.
Founded in 1996, iBasis is a wholesale carrier of international long distance telephone calls and a provider of retail prepaid calling cards.
