Conatel head: ACQ could be best solution for number portability

Friday, July 11, 2008

The all call query (ACQ) routing system could be the best system for the implementation of number portability (NP) in Ecuador, telecoms council Conatel's head Jaime Guerrero told BNamericas.

However, the official said that Conatel is also studying other systems for NP. ACQ allows for the calling party's network to consult the central database and determine whether the number called has been ported or not.

"The technical committee had a couple of meetings with the mobile operators to work on this issue, but the regulator will have the final word regarding the selection of the system to implement number portability," Guerrero said.

Guerrero said that operators were initially reluctant to implement NP due to the high cost of the implementation. However, the official said that the stance has changed and mobile operators are working closely with the authorities towards NP implementation.

Last May, the country's national constitutional assembly approved the implementation of NP. The process is expected to be carried out in 2009.
