Digitel to launch 12 Android phones in 2011

Venezuela's mobile telephony operator Digitel expects to launch 12 mobile phones with Android mobile operating systems during 2011, local press reported.

Among the phones the operator plans to start offering next year are the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, X10 Mini and X10 MiniPro, as well as the Samsung Galaxy Spica phone, Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab. Digitel will also reportedly sell the LG P5000, the ZTE Racer, the HTC Desire phone and the Alcatel OT980.

Early this year, the company said it expected to end 2010 with 8.5mn GSM subscribers. Digitel ended last year with about 7mn subscribers overall.

The company is controlled by telecoms group Telvenco, which acquired 100% of the company in May 2006.

Other operators in Venezuela include Movilnet of state-owned telco Cantv, and Movistar, part of Spain's Telefonica (NYSE: TEF).
