Mexico's telecoms giant Telmex (NYSE: TMX) will launch a prepaid fixed line service next week, Mexican daily El Economista reported.
The new service - the name of which has yet to be decided - will operate along similar lines to prepaid mobile services.
Users will only have to pay for the cost of installing the fixed line, and as a result will not face any monthly billing statements. They can activate their phones with calling cards similar to those Telmex offers for its public telephones.
The principal objective of the service is to give users greater control over their telephone expenses, while reducing the costs and problems associated with collection and billing. Fixed line operators in Brazil, Chile, Argentina and Venezuela already offer similar prepaid services.
