Axtel, Megacable go after wholesale shared network contract
Mexican telcos Axtel and Megacable are the first companies to submit an economic proposal to develop the country's wholesale shared network.
Megacable and Axtel are participating as part of the Altan consortium, which also includes Fideicomiso Coinversión Marapendi, IFC, CTL, Hansan, FF Latam, and IGI.
The economic proposals will be opened on November 4, with the ministry of communications and transport announcing the winner of the tender on November 17.
The cost of the wholesale shared network is estimated at US$8bn and seeks to cover over 85% of the population. While broadband coverage in Mexico extends across most of the territory, internet penetration is below 50%.
According to the World Economic Forum, Mexico has the lowest broadband penetration among the OECD countries, with 12 subscriptions per 100 inhabitants.
