Brazil delays digital TV switchover
Brazilian communications ministry MiniCom has altered the schedule for the analog TV signal switch-off in the country, following requests from broadcasters and telecom operators.
According to the terms published Monday in the federal gazette, the country's largest city, São Paulo, will now have the analog signal turned off in March 2017 instead of May 2016 in the previous timetable, while Rio de Janeiro's switchover was pushed back to October next year from November this year.
After last November's flop in Rio Verde, a new pilot will be tested in federal capital Brasília in October this year. Brazil's analog blackout will be gradual and will be carried out one metropolitan region at a time, taking a total of three years.
In effect, the analog shutdown will now only begin in 2017, starting in the big state capitals and major metropolitan regions. This process will end in December 2018. After that, it will be the time for smaller capitals and other localities. The last places in Brazil to have the analog signal shut off will be in 2023. The specific dates for this second lot of locations have not yet been released.
The major hurdle for the analog switch-off has been lower than expected digital TV-readiness in households.
In a statement, MiniCom said the adjustment in the digital TV schedule took into account the major events that will take place in the country until 2018 and the importance of digital TV transmission and reception for those events.
