Colombia's internet subscriptions on the rise

Colombia reached 14.4mn internet subscriptions in the second quarter of this year, a 21.8% increase from the same period last year, according to IT and communications ministry MinTIC's latest quarterly report.

By the end of 2Q16, the country had 8.63m mobile broadband subscriptions, amounting to 60% of total internet connections. These represent a 33.5% increase from the same quarter of last year.

Of the mobile broadband connections, 3G subscribers totaled 4.53mn, followed by 4G subscribers at 3.65mn, and 2G came in last with 441,244 subscribers.

Colombia could reach 20mn 4G connections in 2020, 32% of the 64mn mobile connections expected for that year, according to the GSM Association.

Fixed internet connections grew 7.7% year-on-year in the second quarter, reaching 5.7mn subscribers.

The report indicated there were 46.2mn prepaid mobile phone lines by the end of the second quarter, which amounted to 79.8% of the country's mobile phone subscriptions.

Colombia also had 11.7mn postpaid mobile lines, amounting to 20.1% of total mobile phone subscriptions. This segment has experienced minimum variations since last year, according to the report.
