Ecuador ends January with over 15.6mn mobile subscribers
Ecuador had 15.6mn mobile telephony subscribers at the end of January, almost flat compared to end-January 2013, according to the latest data from local telecoms technical superintendency Supertel.
There were 13mn subscribers in the prepaid segment and 2.68mn in postpaid, according to the watchdog.
Claro, a unit of Mexican giant América Móvil (NYSE: AMX), continued to lead the market with 9.9mn subscribers, followed by Movistar, controlled by Spain's giant Telefónica (NYSE: TEF), with 5.19mn, and state-run telco CNT with 549,425.
With these figures, Claro had a 63.3% market share, Movistar a 33.2% share and CNT 3.51%.
In the last twelve months, Claro's mobile subscribers declined by nearly 400,000, while Movistar added 202,660.
Since acquiring mobile operator Alegro PCS in August 2010, CNT, the smallest operator in the country, has recorded a net addition of 262,528 subscribers, according to data from Supertel.
