IFT projects US$122mn investment needed for 2016
Mexican telecom watchdog IFT has approved its budget for 2016, which outlines investments of 2bn pesos (US$122mn), according to a press release from the institution.
The forecast is in line with the budget approved for 2014 and 2015, and it represents a 3% drop compared with this year and a 6.8% decrease against last year. This report will be filed with the finance ministry (SHCP).
IFT has several pending spectrum licenses for 2016, including part of the 2.5GHz band.
The plenary of the IFT also approved reviewed interconnection rates, which are applied when a competing operator uses dominant agent América Móvil's infrastructure, as well as resolving disputes over interconnection between operators.
América Móvil has fought IFT over interconnection rates several times since it was named a preponderant agent in 2013 and slapped with asymmetrical measures, including being obliged to open its infrastructure up to competing providers.
Fixed telephony operator Axtel recently reached a truce with both Telefónica and América Móvil, signing an agreement with the latter to become an MVNO using its infrastructure.
