Speed, inequality still hindrances for internet in Brazil schools
Connection speeds and unequal penetration between public and private schools, as well as urban and rural ones, remain chief hindrances to the use of internet in Brazilian schools, a survey by the country's internet steering committee CGI.br shows.
According to the 2014 ICT education study released this week, only 41% of public school students who claimed to be internet users accessed the web from their schools. Among the privately educated ones, the rate is 50%. Most of the students said they access the internet at home.
The study covered 930 schools from September 2014 to March this year and included principals, 881 coordinators, 1,770 teachers and 9,532 students.
According to the study, 93% of urban schools have computers connected to the network, 92% of public schools and 97% of private schools.
The proportion of schools with mobile computers and tablets is growing: 79% of public schools have laptops (compared to 73% in the previous survey) and 29% tablets (11% in 2013).
However, the study shows speed is still a major barrier. The survey found that 41% of public schools with internet access were connected at speeds of up to 2Mbps. In 2013, this proportion was 50%. In private schools, speeds tend to be faster, with only 21% connected at up to 2Mbps.
Another key finding of the study was that while Brazilian teachers have an interest in making use of digital resources, infrastructure conditions and training in the use of the internet for pedagogical purposes can sometimes be an obstacle.
According to the study, just 30% of public school teachers said the main place for the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) is the classroom, in activities with students, flat compared to 2013.
